Turn A Plastic Bottle Into A Self Water System For Planters

With summer here, and vacations right around the corner, I needed to figure something out for my flower planters.  I usually have a neighbor water my planters but with the high heat they still don't seem to get enough water. This way they can have a little extra water and when we arrive back home they won't look so water deprived.  We always have empty water or soda bottles around the house.  What a great way to reuse the empty bottles by using them as a self water system.

All you need is an empty water or soda bottle.
A pair of sharp pointy scissors or anything with a small point.

First you will poke holes in the top of your bottle lid.  Not too big, or the water will drain out faster.  Not too small or the dirt will get clogged in the holes.  Then fill your bottle with water.  Place the lid on and put bottle upside down in a flower planter. Bury the bottle top just slightly so it won't tip over.  The water will slowly drain into the roots of the plants.  If you place your planters out of the sun when you leave for vacation, they won't take so much water.  The self water system will help keep your plants watered.  Of course the water won't last for a long time.  If you are gonna be gone for long periods of time, you will need to have someone either fill up your bottles or give your planters some water.  What do you do with your planters when you go on vacation?
